The Divine Legend Behind Palani

The origin of Palani is deeply connected to Hindu mythology and represents the essence of spiritual wisdom and self-realization. According to legend, the sage Narada Muni once presented a divine golden mango, known as the Jñanapazham or “fruit of wisdom,” in the celestial court of Lord Shiva. Since the fruit could not be divided, Shiva decided to offer it to one of his sons — Lord Vinayakar (Ganesha) or Lord Murugan (Subrahmanya) — through a challenge. Whoever circled the world first would receive the sacred fruit.

Filled with youthful determination, Murugan mounted his peacock and began his journey around the world. Vinayakar, however, chose a different path. Believing that his parents embodied the entire universe, he simply walked around Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Pleased by his wisdom and devotion, Shiva awarded the fruit to Vinayakar.

When Murugan returned and discovered that the fruit had already been given away, he felt deeply hurt and disappointed. Renouncing worldly attachments, he left Mount Kailash and journeyed to the hills of Palani, where he chose to live as a saintly ascetic.

Moved by their son’s sorrow, Shiva and Parvati came to comfort him and lovingly said, “Pazham Nee,” meaning “You are the true fruit of wisdom.” Over time, the phrase evolved into the name “Palani,” symbolizing that true wisdom comes not from possessions or rewards, but through inner realization and self-discovery.

Pathways to the Palani Murugan Temple

There are five different routes leading to the sacred hill temple in Palani, each offering devotees a distinct pilgrimage experience filled with faith and tradition.

Steps Path (Paadai Vazhi)

The most traditional and spiritually significant route consists of nearly 693 steps leading to the hilltop temple. Many devotees choose to climb barefoot as an act of devotion and penance.

Winch Service (Hill Railway)

The winch service provides a comfortable and convenient journey to the temple, especially suitable for senior citizens, families, and children.

Rope Car Service

The rope car offers a scenic aerial ride with beautiful panoramic views of the hills, temple surroundings, and the town of Palani.

Elephant Path (Yanai Paathai)

Historically used by temple elephants and ceremonial processions, this gently sloping pathway is preferred by pilgrims seeking a less strenuous climb.
